AMAZON (BDCi) – The leader of the Yanomami tribe located in the Amazon rainforest says he has been receiving a series of death threats.
Davi Kopenawa, one of Brazil’s most prominent indigenous leaders, also says that armed men have raided the offices of lawyers that work with him.
The allegedly hired gunmen asked for Kopenawa and apparently sought to kill him.
Following a major operation to evict hundreds of gold miners from Yanomami land, Kopenawa says that his association received a death threat from the miners.
But miners still continue to invade the land.
He has since filed a report with police and made a formal request for police protection for his son, his colleagues and himself.
Kopenawa has been fighting to protect Yanomami land for decades. He travels abroad to raise awareness of the urgent need to protect the Amazon rainforest.
