SANTOS (BDCi) – It was announced Wednesday (13) that Eduardo Campos, the 49-year-old candidate in Brazil’s upcoming presidential elections, died in a plane crash.
After encountering very bad weather on the flight headed for Guaruja airport, air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft, which later plunged into several homes in a densely-populated neighborhood.
The other passengers (a campaign photographer, a cameraman and a press adviser) as well as the two pilots were also killed.
President Dilma Rousseff has declared three days of mourning for the nation and has cancelled campaign events.
The married father of five served two terms as governor of Pernambuco state in north-eastern Brazil and was in third place in opinion polls for October’s presidential election.
