RIO DE JANEIRO (BDCi) – The votes are in and the names of the mascots for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been chosen.
The mascots will be known as Tom and Vinícius, named after the singer-songwriters who wrote “The Girl from Ipanema,” the famous bossa nova classic.
The pair of names received 44 percent of the votes in an online poll.
The Olympic mascot, pictured on the left, is named after Vinícius de Moraes. And on the right, the Paralympic mascot is named after Antônio Carlos Jobim, who was more commonly known as ‘Tom.’
The 2016 Rio Olympic Games, less than two years away, will be the first ever to be held in South America.
