Non-venomous snaked discovered in Brazil

ESPINHAÇO MOUNTAINS (BDCi) – It was announced Tuesday (19) that a new species of non-venomous snake has been discovered in the savannas of central Brazil.

The new serpent has been named Atractus spinalis and was found by scientists from the federal universities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Found under some rocks in the Espinhaço Mountains between Minas Gerais and Bahia, the snake is one foot long with reddish skin, light brown markings and a yellowish tint underneath.

Over 1,800 species of reptiles and amphibians have already been identified in Brazil and scientists believe that many more are still waiting to be discovered.
