Carson, CA (BDCi Sports) – The Los Angeles Galaxy took care of business with a solid defensive performance Friday night beating the Montreal Impact 2-0 in front of 19,058 fans at the Stub Hub Center. It was a night to honor the home team’s “legends” Clint Mathis, Cobi Jones, Carlos Ruiz and Landon Donovan. Not only did the fans honor them, but their team also showed respect by winning in a legendary form.
The scoring was started in the 10th minute when Emmanuel Boateng flipped a pass at the top of the area for Romain Alessandrini to one-touch it past a wrong-way diving Evan Bush. It was the Marseille forward’s third goal of the season.
Another key moment in the first half was the red card dismissal of Montreal midfielder Marco Donadel after fouling Jermaine Jones on the pitch in the 44th minute. This made the Impact play shorthanded the rest of the game and further frustrated their ability to get shot opportunities.
The Impact’s best chance at a goal came in the 53rd minute when star striker Matteo Mancosu made a run on the L.A. goal, creating space between him and Jelle Van Damme. The Bologna loanee was able to fake Galaxy keeper Clement Diop, but his hard shot missed wide left post.
The Galaxy continued creating opportunities with the one player advantage but couldn’t close the deal against Evan Bush. Finally, in the 74th minute, Jermaine Jones got past the defense and challenged Bush with a ground shot that the Impact keeper just couldn’t keep from netting. It was the former U.S. national team stand-out’s first goal with his new club.
The red card on Donadel at the very end of the first half was huge as the Galaxy took 11 shots in the second half and kept the visitors on the defensive end.
The Galaxy’s win took them from 10th place to 6th place in the Western Conference of the MLS. They travel to Florida during the week to face Orlando City, starring international legend Kaka next Saturday, April 15th.
