AMAZON (BDCi) – According to Brazilian authorities, a criminal organization believed to have been the “biggest destroyer” of the Amazon has been dismantled.
Police have been working across four Brazilian states, including São Paulo, to bring down the criminal group.
Warrants have been issued for the arrests of 14 members of the group. In addition, 22 search warrants have been issued and four alleged gang members have been called in for questioning.
The gang is accused of invading the rainforest, cutting down trees and burning large areas of public land, only to sell these lands illegally for farming and grazing.
The total cost of the damage inflicted by the criminals is said to be more than $220 million.
As per local media outlets, five men and one woman have already been taken into custody in the state of Pará in connection with destroying the Amazon.
