MLS DECISION DAY? FC DALLAS and LA GALAXY STILL VERY PLAY-OFF GOOD
CARSON, CA (BDCi Sports) —The Los Angeles Galaxy and FC Dallas played to a 0-0 tie in the last regular season game of 2016 in front of a full Stub Hub Center stadium Sunday.
In a match featuring great defensive stops and lucky breaks, the result reflected two clubs that should go deep into the upcoming Western Conference playoffs. FC Dallas wins their first ever “Supporters Shield” which goes to the MLS club with the best regular season record. The team from Texas is feeling pretty great since they also recently won the 2016 U.S. Open Cup, another prestigious tournament among the elite U.S. soccer teams.
The match was without many of the clubs’ best players, out due to either injury or playoff preservation. The Galaxy played without Giovani Dos Santos, Robbie Keane and Stephen Gerrard. FC Dallas played without their recent star acquisition Carlos Ruiz, formerly of the Galaxy in the early 2000’s.
Landon Donovan started again for L.A. and joining Mike Magee, coach Bruce Arena was hoping for more of a spark in the game. But it didn’t happen. While the Galaxy dominated in time of possession with 66%, they couldn’t translate that into shots on goals. Los Angeles could only muster 5 shots the entire afternoon while FC Dallas had 13. One of Dallas’ shots in the first half hit the post, and that was the closest either team came to putting the soccer ball in the net.
With their first place finish, FC Dallas can rest during the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Galaxy however will play Real Salt Lake, the 6th place team in the conference “knockout” round, either October 26th or 27th at the Stub Hub Center. If the Galaxy were to defeat Real Salt Lake, they would likely play Colorado, the 2nd place conference team in a 2-game series.
