RIO DE JANEIRO (BDCi) – The biggest same-sex civil wedding ceremony was held this past Sunday (23) in Rio de Janeiro’s Armazém Utopia.
During the historic event, 160 homosexual and transgender couples had their marriages officiated simultaneously.
The ceremony, put on by Rio sem Homofobia (Rio Without Homophobia) and the Rio de Janeiro State Court, was the fifth mass civil same-sex wedding ceremony held in Rio state.
Brazil officially legalized same-sex marriage in 2013.
Though many in the Brazilian LGBT community see the recognition of marriage as progress, they continue to fight homophobia and anti-gay violence throughout the country.
