New pesticide approved in Brazil

1 Mins read

SÃO PAULO – (BDCi) – It was announced on Friday (18) that Brazil’s government will allow the use of pesticides that contain the active ingredient cyantraniliprole.

The government had previously banned the use of another product, endosulfan, being used to fight the coffee borer beetle, pictured above.

Coffee cooperatives had been lobbying for the approval of the new pesticides to prevent the beetles from damaging coffee crops.

A state of emergency was declared in March in the top coffee growing state of Minas Gerais due to the beetles.

Cyantraniliprole is supposed to protect future crops from the borer beetle.

The pesticide has already been approved in the U.S., the European Union, Canada and Japan.
