WC police capture ‘Dirty War’ torturer from Argentina

SÃO PAULO (BDCi) – Thanks to the joint international efforts of police during the World Cup, an Argentinean fugitive wanted for torture and murder was arrested in the town of Arujá outside São Paulo on Thursday (3).

Salvador Siciliano, now in his 70s, was the head of a notorious anti-leftist death squad some 40 years ago and is wanted for torturing and killing three people during Argentina’s “Dirty War.”

Police forces from the 32 participating nations have been exchanging information more than usual in an attempt to spot security threats and criminals in Brazil.

Procedures are pending for Siciliano’s extradition back to Argentina.

Argentina’s “Dirty War” lasted from 1976 to 1983, during which time a military dictatorship was in power and thousands of people deemed leftists or communists simply disappeared.

It is assumed that the “disappeared” people were tortured and killed by groups like Siciliano’s.
