Violence on public transportation in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO—Police in Brazil are searching for a man thought to have raped a woman on a moving bus in Rio de Janeiro. Witnesses state that the man ran off after abusing a woman for about 30 minutes, and robbing the other passengers.

The crime has shocked the country, and has become the new talking grounds on social media such as twitter and facebook. This, added to a rape of a tourist in late March, has raised security concerns around the World Cup in 2014.

After several episodes, Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, vowed to tighten security and checks on public transportation around the area.

Still, Friday’s attacks came as a surprised to everybody. According to witness reports, ten passengers were taken to the front of the vehicle, and the driver was told to keep driving. After taking their belongings, the man was reported to have hit a 30 year old woman with his gun before raping her.

The man appeared to be under the influence of drugs, and quickly got off the bus, afterwards. Video footage is being reviewed, and police are creating a sketch of the character.

Curbing violence remains a large problem to overcome for the sporting events that will soon grace the nation.
