TEDGlobal 2014 in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO (BDCi) – The 2014 TEDGlobal Conference began this Monday (6) at the Beach Theater in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro and is first time that a South American city hosts the international conference.

The theme at the conference is “South!” and musicians, engineers, designers, scientists and activists will be discussing topics like social media, civic engagement, privacy, financing and technology.

On the first day, Andrés Ruzo, a Peruvian geoscientist, talked about the hydrothermal system of the Amazon River and its effects on wildlife and communities.

Rio-based journalist Glenn Greenwald, famous for breaking the Edward Snowden-NSA story, spoke about modern surveillance, privacy and secrecy.

Sixty-six speakers are scheduled for the conference, including Brazilian director José Padilha (“Elite Squad” films).
