Sao Paulo, Brazil (BDCi) – After a raid in Sao Paulo, Spanish-owned fashion chain Zara was caught with several Bolivian immigrants working under horrible conditions, reported BBC. The immigrant workers were hired illegally by a contractor, said Inditex, Zara’s parent company. Inditex also says they have a zero tolerance policy when dealing with such situations. The 15 workers were found working for numerous hours in a constricted and unhygienic environment, being paid 7-12 U.S. cents an hour. The supplier has accepted full responsibility for the infringement and plans to compensate the workers in compliance with the Inditex Code of Conduct and Brazilian law.
Brazilian authorities have recently created a special task force for locating and shutting down sweatshops.
