Skateboard crackdown by L.A. City Council
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved a new ordinance giving police the authority to ticket skateboarders who engage in dangerous moves.
The law would treat skateboarders like bicyclists, requiring them to obey all traffic signs and speed limits.
It would also give the city the authority to prohibit skateboarding in public parking lots and on specific roadways.
The new law restricts skateboard “bombing,” a practice in which riders race down hills at speeds up to 40 mph.
Concern over skateboard bombing has increased since two teenagers in San Pedro died skateboarding in recent months.
Councilmembers say skateboarders can still make steep downhill runs, but they’ll have to stand upright and maintain speeds that will not be a danger to themselves or others. Violators will be subject to a $250 fine.
