Polio detected in Brazil

1 Mins read

CAMPINAS (BDCi) – According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the polio virus has been detected in Brazil for the first time since 1994.

Minute amounts of the virus were found in a sewage sample taken from an airport near Campinas in the country’s southeastern region.

The sample was collected in March and matches a strain that was recently discovered in Equatorial Guinea on Africa’s central coast.

There have yet to be any reports of any cases of paralysis.

The WHO believes it is quite unlikely that the virus will spread widely because roughly 95 percent of Brazilian children are immunized against polio.

No restrictions on travel to or from the country have been suggested by the WHO.
