Police distribute ‘survival guides’ for World Cup

1 Mins read

SÃO PAULO (BDCi) – The Brazilian newspaper Estadão reports that local police plan to distribute pamphlets at the upcoming World Cup to those attending the soccer event.

The brochures include tips for avoiding a robbery, like keeping valuables out of sight, and advice on how to deal with a mugger, i.e. “do not react, scream or argue.”

For the 2010 World Cup, South Africa issued similar warnings beforehand and actually experienced a noticeable decrease in crime due to heavy police presence.

Brazil has followed suit, deploying 30,000 troops along its borders and throughout the tournament grounds in an effort to step up security.

But according to the U.N., Brazil has one of the highest homicide rates, with 25 in 100,000 people killed or murdered.
