Pelé Museum opens in Brazil

SANTOS (BDCi) – A museum to celebrate the life and career of Brazil’s greatest soccer star was inaugurated in the very city where Pelé rose to fame.

The 73-year-old guest of honor was surrounded by hundreds of dignitaries in the port city of Santos, São Paulo for the official opening of the museum.

Pelé gained his stardom playing for Santos FC from 1956 to 1974, during which time he also led Brazil to three World Cup wins.

The 43,100 square-foot complex cost some $22 million to build and houses over 2,500 items related to the player’s career.

As with other current Cup-related events, protesters were outside the event and delayed some dignitaries’ arrivals. Their chants could also be heard throughout the inauguration ceremony.
