Mayor pushes for immigrant ID cards
L.A. (BDCi) – An initiative to create an official city identification card to help immigrants get access to banking services is being pushed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who says the idea originated in his office.
Though a previous proposal was created in which library cards would serve as debit cards, Villaraigosa is aiming for “full-fledged photo IDs.”
The ID cards, which would include a person’s photo as well as double as a prepaid ATM card, could help reduce the number of immigrants who are targeted for crime.
But City Hall’s critics are calling the effort “ill-advised,” saying it is just another attempt at accommodating illegal immigrants.
Supporters and city officials say the plan offers a practical solution that balances federal immigration laws with making people less susceptible to crime yet more accountable to their respective communities.
An official ID makes it easier to open bank accounts, obtain services from the city and prove identification to law enforcement.
The proposed IDs would not be valid as driver’s licenses and cannot be used for air travel.
A City Council committee is scheduled to the discuss the topic on Tuesday (16).
