Los Angeles Unified School District rehires 450 teachers
LOS ANGELES-(BDCi) – The Los Angeles Unified School District is rehiring 450 teachers for this school year.

The grand rehiring decision was announced by the district Thursday, just in time for the school bells to start ringing for the 2011-2012 school year.

The district revealed that a combination of retirements, resignations, dismissals and a four-day furlough agreement with the teachers union permitted the district to rescind the layoffs.

Some schools already began their school year Friday while cutting back on summer breaks because of new school schedules made to seek higher retention.

“We promised we would review all school budgets for opportunities to bring staff back. We are fortunate to tell 450 teachers that they will have a place to share their passion, skills, and knowledge with our students,” Wrote LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John Deasy in an email released to the media Thursday.

As of June this year, more than 5,600 K-12 teachers and support services personnel were laid off.

The district has rescinded and reemployed over 4,170 school workers, and 1,450 teachers and support staff remain laid off according to the release.
