Los Angeles school faces with Parent Trigger Law

Los Angeles (BDCi) – Parents battle over failing school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. 24th Street Elementary School in West Adams has been the target of a parent protest because of its poor educational system. Consequently, the parents are referring to The Parent Trigger, a California law that allows parents to take over a school that’s performing poorly.

Under the Parent Trigger Law, once parents gather 51% of parent signatures they are allowed to make the necessary changes that are best for the students. The school can make staff changes and even transform it to a charter school.

According to La Weekly, Ben Austin, executive director of the Parent Revolution said, “This movement is powerful enough and this law is powerful enough, that the parents will prevail.”

The parents met with Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent, John Deasy, where he promised to work with them.

This is the first time parents at any school in the L.A. unified have implemented this law.

David Phelps, spokesman of Parent Revolution said to the Huffington Post that the parents had been trying to make a change at the elementary school for the past four years.
