SAO PAULO, BRAZIL (BDCi) – The Brazilian ex-Olympic gymnast who was hurt while she was preparing to compete as a skier at the Sochi Olympics will be transferred to a Miami hospital that specializes in spinal injuries.
Lais Souza has been at the University of Utah hospital since hitting a tree while skiing recreationally on Jan. 27. The accident left her unable to breathe or move her arms and legs.
The 25-year-old Souza remains in a serious but stable condition and doctors say it is too soon to know whether she will be permanently paralyzed.
The Brazilian Olympic Committee said Wednesday that Souza was likely to remain in Miami for at least 60 days.
Souza participated in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics as a gymnast before switching to the winter sport.
