Inmates end revolt at Brazilian prison

ARACAJU (BDCi) – After holding four prison officers hostage for more than a day, inmates ended an uprising at a penitentiary on Sunday (18).

It began midday Saturday (17) in one of the wings of the Advogado Antonio Jacinto Filho prison complex in the northeastern city of Aracaju.

Close to 130 relatives of prisoners who came to visit on Saturday and were caught in the middle of the revolt were also allowed to leave.

The family members were never directly threatened; they were trapped while the inmates held the officers hostage.

The rebellious inmates’ main demand, that certain prisoners be transferred to other jails, was met.

Two officers suffered minor injuries.
