Inmate revolt ends at Brazilian prison
ARACAJU, BRAZIL (BDCi) – After 470 prisoners revolted at a prison over the weekend, the inmates released all the people they had taken hostage during this 26-hour uprising.
The prisoners, said to have been armed with knives and three rifles, accused the guards of “mistreating” them. They demanded better living conditions and more respect for visiting women.
Once the authorities promised to investigate their complaints, the inmates released the hostages, unharmed.
131 people were originally taken hostage, including three guards. 28 of the hostages were released Monday morning (16), the rest, later that day.
Most of the hostages were relatives visiting inmates when the riot began.
