CARACAS, VENEZUELA—(BDCi) Controversial Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez says he will run for re-election after recovering from cancer, he told reporters on Monday.
The 56-year-old political leader underwent an operation in Cuba only a month ago to remove a cancerous tumor in his pelvic area. Although he has not declared exactly what kind of cancer he has, speculation is that it could be either colon or prostate cancer.
Chavez told reporters his battle with cancer will not stop him from running for another presidential term next year and stated that he was “absolutely sure” the country would elect him again.
“I am the candidate of the revolution,” said the vocal leader, as he spoke by phone to a group of his backers after coming back from Cuba for treatment.
Analysts predict that Chavez is certain to run again for president, but that his re-election prospects depend on whether his health worsens.
Retired General Gonzalo Garcia Ordonez said Monday that the main rivals to succeed him would come from the armed forces and from Chavez’s strong supporters.
