RIO DE JANEIRO (BDCi) – A new hospital has recently opened, expected to serve an estimated 2.3 million people living in eastern Rio de Janeiro.
R$46 million were invested in Hospital Estadual dos Lagos in Saquarema, a medical facility that will focus on treating orthopedic and surgical trauma, high-risk pregnancies and surgical gynecology.
The public health system in Brazil is full of shortages of both staff and resources. People who cannot afford the cost of private care often travel abroad to seek medical attention, and some even die while waiting to be treated.
450 health professionals and support administrators have been employed at the new hospital.
Hospital Estadual dos Lagos is part of President Dilma Rousseff’s major project Mais Médicos (More Doctors).
The program currently employs almost 15,000 Brazilian and foreign doctors working in nearly 4,000 municipalities.
