Dilma first woman to open UN general assembly

BRASILIA, BRAZIL (BDCi) – President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil will open the round of speeches that begin the United Nations General Assembly in New York, making her the first woman to ever do so.

Rousseff says she takes “great pride in being the first woman, a Brazilian woman, to open the United Nations General Assembly.”

Topics Rousseff is expected to cover include gender inequality, the global economic crisis and this year’s main attraction, “full support” for Palestine’s statehood recognition from the UN.

Rousseff will also comment on the role of women in today’s world.

Brazil has been making the initial speech at the UN General Assembly since 1947.
