Brazil’s police clash with indigenous locals

BRASÍLIA (BDCi) – Indigenous protesters held a protest on Tuesday (27) just outside the new National Stadium in Brasília.

Riot police on horses were seen on live television firing tear gas at the protesters. Some demonstrators with bows and arrows fired a few rounds at police and even threw rocks and threw back gas canisters.

The indigenous activists were there to rally against the shrinking of some indigenous groups’ reserves.

They were joined by protesters demonstrating against the 2014 World Cup.

Police reported no injuries after the clashes ended by nightfall, where some 300 protesters had gathered.

Other protests and strikes, including those by teachers and police, have been taking place all over Brazil in the past few months, some due in part to the World Cup.
