Brazil to be biodiesel leader in 2012

BRAZIL (BDCi) – Brazil will become the world’s largest producer of biodiesel in 2012 and surpass Germany, reports IBCC.

Miguel Rossetto, president of Petrobras, says that, despite success, the biodiesel program in Brazil still faces challenges, like decentralization of production.

He added that Brazil needs to continue growing but in way that is evenly distributed amongst Brazilian states and that welcomes the participation of smaller producers.

Rossetto says the growth of Brazil’s biodiesel program depends on the increase of the amount of biodiesel blended with mineral diesel, which is at a 5% rate currently. He advocates an update of the nation’s fiscal and tax incentives for the industry. He believes this will support regions of lower agricultural and social development.

From 2008 to 2011, the sales of biodiesel in Brazil have grown from 1.1 million cubic meters to 2.6 million cubic meters.
