BRAZIL (BDCi) – Brazil is getting ready to have three auctions in 2012, where wireless airwaves for cell phone services will be sold off.
Bloomberg reports that big names such as Telefonica Brasil, Tim Participacoes and Anatel are all rumored to be preparing for the auctions, especially those in which the 2.5 GHz band will be auctioned, used in 4G services.
There were 232 million wireless subscribers in Brazil by the end of October, an increase of 19% from last year. High speed internet subscriptions on fixed or mobile lines has risen 22% since last year to 16 million users.
While 764 MHz of airwaves will have been offered to cell phone companies by the end of the next year, Brazil must reach 980 MHz by 2015 just to keep up with national demand.
