BRASILIA (BDCi) – President Rousseff and the Brazilian Congress have passed a law that requires DNA from convicted criminals to be included in the national DNA database.
The DNA database matches profiles to evidence from unsolved violent crimes.
Brazil is the 56th country to pass such a DNA database legislation and the third in South America, behind Chile in 2007 and Uruguay in 2010.
Countries with similar programs have seen dramatic increases in both the number of crimes solved and prevented.
Brazil’s DNA database is expected to become the largest in Latin America and even one of the largest in the world.
