FONTANA, CA (BDCi) – Four people have been arrested for their part in a money-soliciting scam, telling people the funds were for a baby’s funeral.
The scam was discovered when police resounded to a call about a woman that was begging for money. Police say Heather Nichols, 21, one of the suspects, was on a street corner holding a sign with an infant’s picture.
According to KTLA, she confessed that she was part of an operation that claimed the money was to pay for the funerals of dead babies.
Catherine Mendez, 22, Chastity Doll, 20 and Jamari Carter, 26, were also arrested in connection to the scam.
The scammers made $700 to $1,400 a day during their operation, which lasted anywhere from six months to a year and spanned San Diego, Modesto and even Arizona.
