A possible heatwave to hit L.A this holiday weekend
LOS ANGELES (BDCi) – A heat wave is moving into Southern California that will bring temperatures to possible “dangerous levels,” according to a statement from the National Weather Service.
Officials said the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys could hit the century mark and the Antelope Valley could see temperatures of up to 110 degrees. Even the Hollywood Hills could see temperatures in the high 90s. Beaches will be cooler, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Temperatures are not expected to cool until sometime next week.
The Department of Public Health shared some tips for avoiding heat-related illnesses: people should avoid strenuous outdoor activities and take extra precautions such as restricting strenuous activities to early morning.
They also advise:
– drinking plenty of water but to avoid caffeine and alcohol which cause fluid loss – drinking fruit juice or sports drinks to replace salt and minerals lost through sweating – taking advantage of shade and air conditioning
– that children, the elderly and pets should never be left in an enclosed vehicle, even briefly. The temperature can quickly rise to life-threatening levels, even with the windows partly open. According to officials, each year there are hundreds of heat-related deaths.
“When temperatures are high, prolonged sun exposure may cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, director of the county Department of Public Health, according to a L.A. Times report.
