(BDCi) — Clarence Seedorf helped inspire Botafogo to the Guanabra Cup after they defeated Vasco da Gama 1-0.
Seedorf, 36, who joined the Brazilian club from AC Milan last year, claimed his first title since moving to South America as Botafogo wrapped up the first stage of the Rio de Janeiro state championship.
The former Netherlands international started the move that led to Lucas’ 80th-minute winner with a back flick to a teammate who then crossed into the area for Lucas who fired a low shot through the Vasco defenders.
“It was one of the most important goals of my career,” Lucas said.
The victory gives the club their seventh Guanabra Cup and ensures their qualification into the final of the Rio championship. Botafogo will automatically secure the state title if they can also win the Rio Cup, the competition’s second stage.
