13 arrests during May Day protests
L.A. (BDCi) – The streets of Los Angeles were scattered with protesters from several groups Tuesday (1), slowing down traffic and attracting a police presence, at times more numerous than the protesters themselves.
Only a few hundred people gathered for the annual May Day immigrant and labor-rights march, similar to the poor turnout last year.
However, about a thousand Occupy protesters converged in downtown, creating a somewhat chaotic scene for the public as well as for police.
Later, a few hundred people gathered at Pershing Square.
A city-issued permit stated that all protesters could gather until 10 p.m. and most were gone by 10:30 p.m.
Before the end of the night, police had reported 13 arrests; ten LAX demonstrators and three in downtown.
At least one officer was injured after being hit in the head with a skateboard, denting her ballistic helmet. She was hospitalized in good condition.
